I use Tabata Intervals in almost all of my fitness fusion practices. They offer so much bang for your buck. Did you know that if done optimally, can be your FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH, in just 4 minutes?! Keep reading, I share some more of those glowing benefits below.
Why do I do tabata at least 3x a week? I love the intensity, I love the challenging pulse of high intensity and low! The intervals are fun and exciting, invigorating and effective, and you can get as creative as you like in designing your sets.
I love that for 20 seconds I am encouraged to bring my full-out self to the exercise. Just 20 seconds! I can do that, and you can do that too. Then there is a 10 second rest to recover. Do a total of 8 rounds of this, and you have just completed a Tabata Protocol.
You must get into high intensity mode in each of those 8 sets to really reap the immense benefits of this short, 4 minute circuit. This means you should be out of breath, big time, buy the time you are through, and even better if your muscles are burning. If you accomplish this my friend, you have to put your body into anaerobic training and this assists our body in releasing the “fountain of youth” hormone, the human growth hormone.
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) & Exercise
Human growth hormone helps us to grow big and tall when we are adolescence and teenagers, and when we are middle aged and beyond this miracle hormone is a powerhouse player in helping us burn fat, and live with increased energy and vitality. Some people even pay really big money to get this hormone injected into their bodies. Yikes. This approach has not been tested in the long run, and may even teach the body to stop producing it itself.
I am all for tapping into the potential and awesomeness of my own body to produce it naturally. High intensity intervals is one great way to do it, and Tabata Protocol is one a way I like to tap into the wellspring of this fountain of youth!
Plyometric Exercises And Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers
To get into high intensity mode I often use plyometric exercises. In these exercises you are jumping and using fast twitch muscle fibers. Did you know that approximately 50% of our muscle fibers are fast/super fast twitch muscle fibers? This means that 50% of your body’s muscle potential may be left unchallenged in most weight lifting routines, in most all yoga practices and in exercises like walking and hiking.
Plyometrics and high intensity intervals rock my world! Here are the some of the benefits of training in this way, that keep me coming back for more:
- increase in energy
- increases strength
- increase your body’s capacity to burn fat for up to 24 hours after your workout
- variability in heart rate = vitality in health
Some of my favorite Plyomentric exercises include:
- squat jumps
- buddha squat jumps
- burpees
- tuck jumps
