If you have a deep wish in your heart you are not pursuing, this message is for YOU.
When I was a kid, I dreamed of living in Hawaii. Nobody told me stories about it, I didn’t know anyone from there, I just knew in the depths of my heart that was where I wanted to live.
After my first year of college I visited the islands and affirmed my deep desire.
To make a long story short….. for years I would say I wanted to move to Kauai, visited numerous more times camping and hiking in the summers, but I continued living in Michigan.
It was ” comfortable” there. I had my family, close friends and community. I was teaching yoga and loved the studios and students.
It was “easy/safe” for me there in Michigan. But deep inside I knew Kauai was where I wanted to be. One day I made the choice and set a date to go. I told myself if it didn’t work out at least I tried and I could always return to Michigan if I needed too.
So, on my date set, I left with 2 bags and a big wish. No home, no job, no yoga community, no car, no nothing. I simply followed my heart and stepped into the mystery.
Living On Kauai
Upon arrival I immediately got hooked up from a friend of a friend to stay in one of her empty bedrooms. It didn’t have furniture, I slept on my therma-rest on the floor, but I was happy as a pig in mud. I will always hold a dear place in my heart for Nina, now founder of Nani Moon Mead here on island, for that. Which by the way she was experimenting with making mead in her carport back in that day, and now her mead is all over the place and she has a meadery here right on island! Ok, back to the original story. 🙂
I believe it was on day 2 I went on my search for a vehicle. The Kuhio Dollar Slasher Sale was happening in Lihue at one of the car lots. How perfecto?! While I was purchasing my little white car I received a phone call from a friend asking if I was still coming to Kauai. “Well, YES!” I replied, “I am actually here right now. Got here a couple days ago.” He then proceeded to ask me if I was looking for a place to live. He had friends whom were looking for a caretaker for their home and cats and my friend Taj referred me. So we set a date and a few days later I drove up to their home to meet Bill and Margo.
When I got out of my car I was certain that a camera crew was going to jump out of the tropical foilage saying, “haha, you are on candid camera!” Honestly, I could NOT believe that this could be true. The home was a dream and all I could hear was the waterfall gently flowing into the pond in the backyard which was acreage on a reservoir! I care took their home and animals for about 2 years.
Zip-Line Guide Kauai
Within the first couple weeks I also got a really fun job as a Zip-line guide. I was driving down the road, saw the company sign, thought “Damn that would be fun!” And drove by thinking, “oh, I have no experience with that. They would never hire me.” But then I stopped that thought in it’s track and I turned my car around. When I went into the office they indeed said they were looking for a Zip-line guide! However, I was probably too short for the job. I asked for a chance, and thanks to my guns and my ability to pull the cables to me, I got the job! 🙂
Teaching Yoga On Kauai
The teaching yoga part was not so easy. For the first time I was making flyers, posting them all over, and renting space at a community center. I recall spending money renting space and not having enough people, often no one, show up to even pay my rent space. I did this for months. Months! However, I know that I know that I know that this is what I am put here to do. To teach yoga and fitness and movement of our precious bodies. And although I was discouraged to tears often, I never gave up. The “road bumps” I have experienced on this path have also been countless as well. But I never gave up.
To wrap this story up, I wanna share that today I live on the north shore of Kauai with my husband (whom I met here) and our daughter on our micro farm. We have chickens, ducks, turkeys, a cat, a dog and compete with a pig! My yoga and fitness studio is a yurt that my husband built for me here on our property. I co-teach yoga teacher trainings here on the Hawaiian Islands, lead soul-quenching yoga and fitness retreats, my public classes are always to full capacity with the most amazing women on the planet attending each week, and I am about to launch a new website that allows me to offer my yoga and fitness classes globally!
I am living the life of my dreams. I am happy, healthy, blessed and grateful. And it all started with me being courageous enough to FOLLOW MY HEART here to Kauai. I could still be in Michigan dreaming of living here, shoveling snow in the winter too. Burrrr. But I made the decision to set a date to MOVE, and I did it, and here I am.
LIVING Your Dream
What dreams do you have in your heart? Are you following them? I encourage you to set a date and make them happen! Take action! The time is now and this life is so precious and full of magic and miracles, but you must follow your heart to experience them.
